Communications Advisor (Public & Community Relations)

Plains Midstream Canada has grown significantly into a premier crude oil and refined products transportation and marketing company in North America.  This growth has resulted in the creation of a new  Advisor, Public & Community Relations position responsible to develop and implement internal and external communications strategies, tools and tactics which support our overall corporate communications mandate.  While being based in our Calgary corporate office, some travel to our field locations will be required.


Responsibilities:

  • Develop/ implement strategic communication plans that support and further Plains Midstream Canada’s business objectives and operation mandates;
  • Work with field and operation personnel to build and/or enhance relationships with key regional stakeholders;
  • Provide relevant updates to external website;
  • Research and identify local community needs, informing Corporate Communications of potential opportunities for community investment at the local level. With field personnel, develop and implement program ideas for the company, local management, local employees and/or local community relations staff;
  • Provide field-based perspectives and strategic input into any corporate community investment planning;
  • Contribute to the development of our visual elements and company messaging and to champion brand consistency;
  • Serve as a communications advisor to field-based personnel, ensuring communications align with corporate priorities and standards;
  • Review and pursue any EH&S communication opportunities and develop understanding of operating issues and assist internal teams in developing associated communication materials, backgrounders, etc.;
  • Support the Emergency Response Plan as required;
  • Work with HR advisor(s) to develop employee and recruiting communication efforts which meet client (operations) needs and are in alignment with company programs or practices;
  • Develop presentations, speaking notes and other materials for senior operations personnel and leadership.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree/ certificate (+ experience) in communications, journalism or public relations;
  • 7+ years experience in communications with experience in community relations;
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
  • Strong consulting skills;
  • Ability to multi-task and work on a wide variety of projects and deadlines;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment and problem-solving skills;
  • Capable of working independently and as part of a team;
  • Ability to build strong relationships with key community members and company personnel in both field and office locations;
  • Oil and gas experience is an asset;
  • Membership with IABC or CPRS is an asset.
